In the cover story of its January 22nd edition Barron’s delves into the ever growing gap between the rich and poor, and how investors can benefit from its above average growth in recent years. One approach, if investors believe that this trend is to continue, is to invest in a basket of luxury good stocks that Citigroup has assembled. To quote the article:
“Citigroup, among other firms, has assembled a basket of stocks that should benefit from the Plutonomy thesis. Luxury-goods stocks have outperformed the market for more than a decade, so the market has to some degree sussed out the macro forces. Yet in many ways the backdrop remains favorable for the sector.”

A. Was planning on buying it last week
after it tanked below 28.90, but decided
to hold off to see how the stock
performed for a few days after the bad
news. Should have bought; would have had
a one and a half point gain. In spite of
the bad news, financials still look
decent with a 10.7 forward PE and a 38%
earnings increase for the latest
quarter. However, they do carry a
significant amount of debt.
