On April 8, 2007,Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA, BRKB), disclosed that it has a 109% stake in Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNI). On May 16, 2007 - Warren Buffett revealed that Berkshire owns 1.6% of Norfolk Southern. It's not just Buffett. Bill Gates investment company, Cascade Investments, holds a substantial stake in CNI.
According to Jim Cramer, rails are back on track. Rail transport is cheaper than transport by truck. Capital investment has already been made. Other rails have taken steps to boost their stock price. On May 9, CSX raised their stock buyback by $1 billion. Also, Carl Icahn disclosed a major investment in CSX, on May 16, 2007.

Carl Icahn has a major stake in CSX. From article on CSX stock buyback (May 9, 2007): Railroad operator CSX Corp. said Tuesday it will repurchase an additional $1 billion in company stock, raise its dividend by 25 percent and make $6.4 billion in capital expenditures over the next four years. The additional share repurchases raise its current buyback program to $3 billion through the end of 2008, which is equivalent to about 15 percent of the company's total market capitalization. The company also said it would raise its quarterly dividend beginning in September to 15 cents from 12 cents and plans to invest $6.4 billion in its operations over the next four years.

yesterday it clipped the s n p for 20
points. these are turbulent times and
all forward statements are a guess. 5
year ones are a joke. we've had a really
nice upternd for the last 8 months, that
may be coming to and end or at the very
least its probably gonna get choppy.
you're gonna have to be the judge of the
reliability of any future estimates and
any one stock can have multiple guesses
at theirs.
