KEWL.PK
Keweenaw Lnd Assn - $175.00
- 0.00%
- $N/A
A truly remarkable timber company that trades at roughly 1/2 the price of the timber on its land. In 2003, KEWL's timber was assessed at $213 per/share. Trading at $171.50, the stock price fails to properly price the timber stands appreciative value, mineral rights, or vast real-estate. Bottom line: the company remains extremely undervalued. Last summer hedge fund manager P. Goldstein offered $200 a share just to look at the books; the company rejected the offer without blinking. In my opinion, with all of the private equity money floating around (at least at this writing), the company could be bought out in 3-5 years-- which, part of me would regret, as it is a green rated company (it cuts less than half its annual growth), with a stellar management team. It is the largest holding in my portfolio. http://www.keweenaw.com/klahome.htm

SYK
Stryker Cp - $48.47
- +2.19%
- $47.71
One of the top surgical parts makers; great growth; I've owned it for years. With baby-boomers in need of knees, hips and other joints, it's a great demographic play. Recently, SYK reported a solid quarter and re-affirmed '07 estimates, but saw a lot of profit-taking after a pending product delay. It looks like the company's long awaited spinal putty will have to wait until late '08-- if not later.

NRT
North European Oi - $31.50
- 0.00%
- $N/A
Oil Royalty Trust with petroleum rights in Oldenburg, Germany. 98% of royalties come from the sale of natural gas-- extracted and sold by the German divisions of XOM and RDS. However, the payouts to the trust are tied to Lt. Heating Oil prices in Germany, and typically lag the current market price by about 3-6 months. Currently yields almost 9%. Great stock to own if you're bullish on Oil/Gas Prices for the long term. One caveat is proven reserves. Due to the structure of the Trust, the information regarding the Oldenburg concession is limited to year by year data. MRO
Marathon Oil Corp - $34.59
- +2.70%
- $34.21
Great intergrated oil, with excellent refining margins. Maybe a bit too much gulf exposure, but otherwise a stock to buy and forget about.

-
OHI
Omega Healthcare - $16.62
- +3.62%
- $16.21
REIT, great demographic play, as it owns nursing home real-estate. A bit pricy due to the private equity interest in the sector, but a good REIT nonetheless. I would wait until the air comes out of the REIT sector before buying...the position has appreciated so much, and the 6% yield is good enough to keep me in-- no matter how much gets taken off the top in the coming months.

IRBT
Irobot Corporatio - $14.09
- +0.28%
- $14.05
Cutting-edge small cap robotics company with valuable intellectual property, and promising military contracts. After earnings Monday, it took a 25% nose dive after a luke warm quarter, and reduced '07 guidance. I think the sell-off represents an excellent entry point for the shares ($15-16). Risks: Only 17-20% Institution owned, with a small public float of 9 million. It's a volatile stock, true to its small cap tech nature. As evidenced by the Q4 CC, management does not tweak earnings to satisfy short-term expectations. While this makes the company more efficient and valuable in the long run, it increases potential for price shocks and disappointed investors impatient for results. Argus Research senior analyst Kevin Calabrese rates the shares a BUY, and recently put a $27 target on IRBT.

ECA
Encana Corp - $59.40
- +4.60%
- $58.36
Canadian Oil Sands play. If you believe in Peak Oil (and it's more credible than Yergin and CERA's analysis), why not start accumulating companies with stakes in the next source of NA oil. ECA, along with CNQ, is one of the best ways to play the Oil Sands.

WFC
Wells Fargo & Co - $28.40
- +4.72%
- $27.50
No Brainer here. Wells Fargo is the best run bank in the US. Period. My father owned WFC for the family for two decades, and its grown consistently over that time frame. If interest rates rise later in the year, the stock won't push to new highs, that's for sure. But that's no reason to sell, either. I'll patiently take my 3% and watch them still deliver earnings growth, despite the threat of inflation + sub prime fallout. WFC is also an equity of choice for whales like Buffet & Tweedy Browne, not to mention a core holding for a slew of massive institutions. It is 69% institution owned.
