Bill Nygren is the Portfolio Manager of the Oakmark family of funds. The Oakmark website, at www.oakmark.com, has the following biography:
Bill is a Portfolio Manager of The Oakmark Fund, The Oakmark Select Fund, and The Oakmark Global Select Fund. He joined Harris Associates as an Investment Analyst in 1983 and later served as the firm's Director of Research from 1990 through March 1998. Previously, Bill was an analyst with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. Bill was named Morningstar's Domestic-Stock Manager of the Year for 2001. He has an M.S. in Finance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Applied Security Analysis Program (1981) and a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Minnesota (1980). He has over twenty-five years of investment experience and is a CFA charterholder®.
The site goes on to say the following about the companies investment strategies:
Because our analysts and portfolio managers seek to identify undervalued companies, the investment process is not based on macro-economic factors, such as the performance of the economy or the direction of interest rates. Nor is it based solely on technical factors, such as the performance of the stock market itself. Instead, we employ an intensive, in-house research process to identify companies that meet our value criteria.
While some value investors may search only for stocks with low price-earnings ratios irrespective of the companies' underlying worth, Oakmark takes a more in-depth approach. In evaluating potential investments, we focus on the following characteristics:
• A company's stock price and whether it is a significant discount to our estimate of underlying business value
• Free cash flows & intelligent investment of excess cash
• High level of manager ownership
Morningstar gives the flagship Oakmark 1 fund 4 stars. The fund is up 18.95% year-to-date and has had annualized returns of 9.93% and 7.09% for the past 3 and 5 year periods respectively. The fund currently has close to $6 Billion in assets.
