For Archie MacAllaster, the animating theme is valuation, or the opportunity to buy fast-growing and financially healthy companies for much less than they're worth. The chairman of New York's MacAllaster, Pitfield MacKay, Archie made his name in financial services.

"my favorite stock...is Lyondell Chemical [LYO], and it trades for 25.03. The earnings estimate for 2006 is $3.25 a share. The stock has ranged from 27.60 to 18.86; now it's closer to the high. Book value is $15 a share. My "07 estimate is $4-plus. They can earn quite a bit more than that, but I'm holding it at $4 and a lot of analysts who follow the stock are estimating a lot less. There must be a dozen or 14 who follow it....Lyondell owns 100% of a large oil refinery in Houston; it bought the Venezuelans' 41% stake. The company indicated recently that the refinery was earning about $2.20-$2.25 a share. The chemical operation will have more than $21 billion of annual revenue this year, and the company has added sales at very little cost to shareholders. Some might even say you're getting the chemical company for free, but that's probably a slight exaggeration. The dividend is 90 cents a share, and the yield is 3.5%. This is a global company; about 40% of its chemical operations are overseas."

Hartford Fin Svc - $25.34

"The P/E based on "07 results is about 9.5. The dividend yield is 2.15%. Return on equity is about 15%, and book value is about $58 a share. The company sells for about 1.6 times book. The growth rate is about 10%. Hartford has raised its dividend in each of the past nine years, and its P/E in the past few years has been about 12. Hartford also has a large stock-buyback program of $5 billion, roughly 2% of outstanding stock...The stock sells for 91.67, and my target price is 115-120."

ACGL
Arch Capital Grou - $69.73

"I've got a new insurance company, in business since 2001. It's Arch Capital [ACGL]...The stock sells for 66.77. Earnings per share in "05 were $3.84. In "06 they should have earned about $8.50, and in "07 they will probably do about $8.50 again, because premiums are going to come down. My target is 90."

Corning Inc - $15.80

- $15.35
"Switching to technology, it's time to buy Corning [GLW] again. Everyone here will probably tell me I'm wrong on this one, but I've bought and sold it for a lot of years, and made money on it. I'm recommending it in a range. There are speculators in Corning big-time, both up and down. The stock sold as high as 29.61 this year and as low as 17.50, and it's now 19.04, very close to the lows of the year. A lot of the selling seemed to come about because prices have been cut 40%, 50%, 60% on the new televisions for which they make glass panels. They probably have 45% of the business. By lowering prices, however, TV manufacturers are going to sell many more units...I'd better add quickly that they have other businesses. The company makes about 22% on capital. It has about $1 billion-$1.4 billion in debt and about $2 billion of liquid assets. Corning is in diesel controls, which should do well with the surge of interest in the environment. The company has had a great history of innovation. It will earn $1.05-$1.10 for 2006, and $1.25-$1.30 this year."

Pioneer Natural R - $43.89

- $43.11
"I've got one more name: Pioneer Natural Resources [PXD]. It trades on the Big Board. Book value is $16 a share. ... The company sold forward a lot of its production and got lower prices for it, but used the money to buy back shares. They reduced the capitalization from 145 million shares to 125 million, and are on their way to 100 million...My stock-price target is 55, up from 38 now. You've got a good chance with this."
