Summary of the bullish and bearish positions mentioned in the September 12th, 2009 Barron's.

  • CVC
    Cablevision Syste
  • $25.60
  • -0.85%
  • $25.67

Cablevision shares could go for nearly twice their recent level in a sale. The spinoff of MSG could be the first step in that direction.

  • NLC
    Nalco Holding Co.
  • $24.13
  • -0.33%
  • $24.03

Even though Nalco shares have more than doubled, to around 18 from their low of 8, they still look attractive. Bulls see them in the 20s within a year.

  • WGO
    Winnebago Ind Inc
  • $11.27
  • +0.45%
  • $11.14

Sad to say, the road ahead looks rougher for Winnebago stock. In fact, whoever's been buying the stock reminds us of the apocryphal Winnebago driver who switched on the cruise control and then went in back to fix a snack. Winnebago has suffered negative gross margins and more than $55 million in negative cash flow over its last-reported 12 months. At the end of May, cash was double the level when its fiscal year began, but that's only because the company has drawn down inventories to rock bottom. Looking ahead to 2010, the recreational-vehicle industry's own optimistic forecast would still leave Winnebago revenue at half the level it says it needs to break even. At foreseeable burn rates, the cash would be gone by then and so would the stock's value.

  • BCS

  • $20.27

  • $20.07

U.K. bank Barclays' (BCS) share price has been becalmed by concerns that its earnings could be hit by rising costs and weakening margins. But some fund managers say that those fears are overplayed, and that despite making solid gains since the beginning of the year, Barclays' shares still have plenty of upside.

  • O
    Realty Income Cp
  • $25.09
  • +0.93%
  • $25.16

Even without major tenant attrition, Realty Income shares look overvalued. They trade around 14 times the company's projected 2009 earnings. Private-market values for similar properties are now at, or below, 10 times earnings, says Levenson. Is it plausible, after a massive commercial-property bubble and in the most overbuilt retail market ever, that a big landlord can avoid serious slippage in rental rates and occupancy? Lewis and other top executives sold substantial amounts of Realty Income stock last month just below the current price -- in Lewis' case, about 20% of his personal holdings. Those monthly dividends were apparently not reason enough for him to hang on to all of his shares.

  • MOT
    Motorola Inc
  • $8.28
  • -2.36%
  • $8.40

Motorola (MOT) is far from back, but it appears to be heading in the right direction. After more than three years of decline in handset sales, the cellphone pioneer has a coherent plan to revive its wireless-handset business -- again. The suburban Chicago-based firm may be one of the few, if not the only, handset makers to engineer a successful turnaround.
