Summary of the bullish and bearish positions mentioned in the June 7th, 2008 Barron's.

-
AA
Alcoa Inc - $13.18
- -0.15%
- $13.22
Based on its business fundamentals, Alcoa could see its shares, recently around 40, jump 25% in a year. If it becomes a takeover target, the upside is closer to 50%.

-
ADP
Automatic Data Pr - $43.51
- +0.44%
- $43.40
ADP is tending well to both its main business and higher-margin operations like 401(k) administration. Result: Its depressed shares could jump more than 40%.

-
DWA
Dreamworks Animat - $33.99
- +1.89%
- $33.54
It's easy to see why newly opened Kung Fu Panda, Dreamworks Animation's (DWA) stab at Chinese martial arts, is winning over the critics: It features a panda (sired by a goose that runs a noodle shop). You'll recognize the voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan and Dustin Hoffman. Did we mention the panda? But a 41% surge in the stock since January suggests that Wall Street counted this golden egg before it was laid, and well before the film opens this weekend. It remains to be seen if enough fans will be won over. At about 30, Dreamworks shares trade at 18.6 times projected 2009 profits -- com- pared with 13.3 times for Disney (DIS) and 13.2 times for movies and entertainment stocks. The stock price translates into nearly 4.3 times projected 2008 sales, compared with 1.7 times for Disney. Billed as wholesome family fun, Kung Fu Panda targets the young -- and the young at heart. But a sizeable chunk of this demographic -- at least the male half -- might be distracted this weekend by Adam Sandler's inexplicable and fuzzy charm in You Don't Mess With The Zohan, while Mom and sis join the line for Sex And The City. Cowen analyst Doug Creutz thinks Panda needs to rake in $55 million to $65 million its first weekend to stay on track for the domestic box-office haul of $200 million to $225 million priced into the stock. Given the increasing competition among animated films, and "lack of long-term growth catalysts," Creutz questions if the film can outperform market expectations.

BEN
Franklin Res Inc - $112.80
- -0.98%
- $114.49
Franklin Templeton's broad mix of assets is a hedge against a bear market in stocks -- should one develop. Its global heft adds stability, and its long Asian history positions the company to capitalize on that region's youth and growing reliance on wealth management. It also boasts net profit margins near 27%, and has $20 a share in cash. Buckingham Research analyst William Katz sees Franklin as "an inexpensive global platform" with a strong balance sheet. His price target: 120.

-
OEH
Orient-express Ho - $8.56
- +2.51%
- $8.37
At a recent 49, Orient-Express was $16 below its price last autumn. A strong business, plus pressure from outside investors, could push the stock to 60 or even 65 again.

-
MCHP
Microchip Technol - $26.76
- +0.98%
- $26.56
Danely likes Microchip Technology (MCHP), which he said is expanding its addressable market and competes against "stiffs" like STMicroelectronics (STM) and Freescale Semiconductor (FSL).

-
AMD
Adv Micro Devices - $6.53
- +0.77%
- $6.26
Danely also picked Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which he said is trading as if it's going out of business. He thought it could be back in the black by year end, and could double from here.

-
PMCS
Pmc - $8.70
- -0.57%
- $8.80
Lipacis likes PMC-Sierra (PMCS) as a pure play on growth in communications infrastructure. He noted that telco balance sheets are stronger than they've been in 20 years, and pricing declines in telco services have moderated. He figured that the thirst for Internet video and other data has soaked up the fiber-bandwidth glut.
