Summary of the bullish and bearish positions mentioned in the October 24th, 2009 Barron's.

-
TDC
Teradata Corp - $29.43
- -0.07%
- $29.37
Lots of cash, a big-league client roster and unrivaled expertise in data-analysis applications mean Teradata shares could jump as much as 80% over the next two years.

-
NVTL
Novatel Wireless - $8.86
- +0.34%
- $8.85
Novatel's shares, already up on expectations for strong Mi-Fi sales, could climb by more than 60%. The company's fortunes should brighten further as it rolls out related products.

-
TJX
T J X Cos Inc - $38.80
- -0.77%
- $39.00
Despite the recent run-up, there may still be upside in TJX shares. The stock might deserve to trade in the mid- to upper-40s, given the retailer's position and sales growth.

-
INFY
Infosys Technolog - $51.23
- +0.55%
- $51.38
Meanwhile, competition is rising, and Infosys' margins could falter as it increases wages to catch up to peers. With nearly 70% of revenue earned abroad, the rupee's rise -- plus any move by India to raise benchmark rates to fight inflation -- could eat into Infosys' bottom line. The "full valuation may overlook rising taxes and a weak dollar," Friedman says. His price target: 37.

-
FDX
Fedex Corp - $81.78
- -0.85%
- $81.93
Lean, mean stock rooms are a boon for Fedex (FDX) and UPS (UPS), which can charge more to rush iPhones or cashmere to stores near you, and who ship to the growing cadre of cost-conscious shoppers ordering online. Alas, Fedex shares, trading at 25 times projected 2010 profit, and UPS shares, trading near 21 times, aren't exactly lean and mean -- although they're still in line with the 23-times multiple for the airfreight and logistics sector. Rising fuel costs also are a concern. But Street analysts aren't yet terribly bullish about the pair, and could nudge estimates higher if shoppers who sat out 2008 allowed themselves to splurge a little in 2009.

United Parcel Svc - $57.51

AMZN
Amazon.com - $129.66
- +0.52%
- $127.51
The bet of an Amazon investor at this level amounts to the idea that the company is becoming this generation's Wal-Mart (WMT), the ultimate discounter/innovator in a frugal, innovation-embracing time, a category killer even in categories yet undiscovered -- and that the stock chart is an impressive picture of growing demand swamping supply. John Roque, technical strategist at WJB Capital, told clients Amazon looked to have plenty of upside on July 31, with the stock at 86. He later compared Amazon's action since 1997 with the path Wal-Mart shares took in the '80s and '90s. Both stocks had huge vertical runs in their early, hyper-growth phases, then long, multi-year sideways ranges, then another sprint higher over a few years. These patterns have Roque sticking with his price target, set over the summer, of 160 for Amazon, higher than every fundamental brokerage analyst's forecast. It might sound outlandish, and maybe plenty will have to break right market-wise for it to get there. But sometimes it pays to quit betting against stocks that keep making even the bulls seem too cautious.

AAPL
Apple Inc. - $199.92
- -0.29%
- $198.33
Hickey had some interesting thoughts on Apple, which he doesn't own right now but advises against shorting. "I don't see anything that's going to stop them," he says, asserting that the key to the story is the power of the iPhone and the App Store. In particular, Hickey thinks that Apple clearly has telegraphed that the days of AT&T 's position as the exclusive U.S. carrier for the phone are numbered. He notes that Apple has already taken a multiple-carrier approach in the U.K. and other markets. Hickey thinks that Apple will sign on Verizon Communications (VZ) as a second U.S. distributor sometime in 2010. In fact, he's pretty sure that Apple already has made the decision.
