Date updated:01-19-2008

Kelley Wright, managing editor of the 42-year-old Investment Quality Trends newsletter, believes "there is a positive to be found in a market retrenchment; value is being created." For the third year in a row, this space is making mention of IQT's Lucky 13 portfolio, which is composed of 13 stocks it buys at the end of December each year and holds until the following December.

Over all, The Lucky 13 has returned, on average, 15.18% over the past eight years (17.82% before the 2007 blip), still considerably ahead of the major indexes.

A. imagine a situations where the demand
for commodities falls more than the
dollar depreciating.

The Glossary of Economics Terms defines
deflation as occurring "when prices
are declining over time. This is the
opposite of inflation; when the
inflation rate (by some measure) is
negative, the economy is in a
deflationary period."

The article Why Does Money Have Value?
explains that inflation occurs when
money becomes relatively less valuable
than goods. Then deflation is simply the
opposite, that over time money is
becoming relatively more valuable than
the other goods in the economy.
