From Barron's 6-25-07:
"Even sophisticated investors know that it's often smart to play it simple. That's why exchange-traded funds linked to indexes have taken off like wildfire in recent years. Those funds, which can be bought and sold at intraday prices and usually have cheap management fees, are popular with professional and individual investors alike.
But with more than 500 ETFs holding close to $500 billion in assets, some discrimination is in order. Paul Mazzilli, the head ETF and closed-end fund analyst with Morgan Stanley, breaks it all down for us.

IVV
Ishare S&p 500 In - $109.89
- -0.22%
- $109.61
From Barron's 6-25-07: "The SPY has much more liquidity, though academics would argue that the iShares products have a slightly better structure. The SPY, being the first ETF out there with a unit investment trust structure, it does not reinvest dividends on an interim basis. The Barclays product (IVV) came out later. It has a little bit more flexibility on rebalancing and also reinvesting dividends. If you are talking about 2% annual yield paid quarterly, if you reinvest dividends, you get a little bit more return on the upside and a little less on the downside.

From Barron's 6-25-07: Which is the best ETF for broad tech exposure? "We are using the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Technology Sector Index (IYW) because it has a broad base. But I also like Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT). Though the IYW has about three times the liquidity, Vanguard has a much lower expense ratio. [The Vanguard ETF's expense ratio is 0.25%, versus 0.48% for the iShares fund.]"

From Barron's 6-25-07: "If you favor large-cap growth, as we do right now, it is a good play on it."

- $50.68
From Barron's 6-25-07: Which is the best way for the average investor to get exposure to international investing through ETFs? "The simplest way is to get a Morgan Stanley EAFE product. My favorite way to get it would be get the Vanguard European ETF (VGK) and Vanguard Pacific ETF (VPL), which are components of MSCI EAFE, and then get iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index (EEM), so you can weight the three."

XLE
Energy Select Spd - $56.60
- -0.93%

From Barron's 6-25-07: What's the best energy ETF? "The Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) is large, highly liquid, and it has a very low expense ratio."
