Pershing Square Capital Management doesn't support the tender offer by CVS Caremark (CVS) for Longs Drug Stores. Pershing Square, which is run by activist investor William Ackman, said that the process that led to the CVS transaction was "seriously flawed," and that the value of Longs substantially exceeds the bid of $71.50 a share. Pershing Square holds about 3.1 million shares (8.7% of the total shares outstanding). It has economic exposure to about 9.2 million notional shares (25.6% stake).

Telefónica added that it seeks to become the leading private shareholder in the new company that will result from the merger of China Netcom and China Unicom (CHU), expected to be completed around Oct. 15.
