Getting started late, but willing to risk more than most might. I seek a mix of solid long-term positions, bought (I hope) with profits from reasonably risky spec stocks. I'm fairly well-informed in tech, biotech, and biopharma, some of which can be found in either category. The long-term section will include some grand old unexciting-but-dependable names. The 3 faves listed below represent only those spec stocks I think have a good shot, plus a crossover that's established but is just starting a new run (I believe).

-
HPQ
Hewlett Packard C - $39.31
- +8.20%
- $37.08
My son is a private contractor for IT services, and has commented recently that HP has really cleaned up its act and is sharpening up its procedures to assure end-user satisfaction. He has always been favorably impressed with their innovations in hardware, he is now very impressed with the way in which they have gotten a handle on running a business that lives and dies on customer satisfaction. The fundamentals are sound, now it looks as if the management may be stepping up.

-
BIDU
Baidu - $135.73
- -1.53%
- $138.52
I just love this stock, it's become my cash cow. I get in and out on a few shares at a time; when it goes down a few dollars, I buy in, and then ride it up (which, so far, has always happened). Given the Chinese economy's penchant for sustained double-digit growth, I think I can do this for some time.

-
GILD
Gilead Sciences - $49.63
- -2.69%
- $51.21
Medicine is something I know a little about; this co. has good product already selling, and an impressive pipeline of other things in a nice progression of stages of readiness. They'll be good for some time to come, I think, but they're also a good short-term play on any announcements.

-
CHL
China Mobile Limi - $53.85
- -0.70%
- $54.07
Seems on track to be THE leader in its sector in China. I have a few shares but intend to add whenever the nervous investor class pushes the prices down.

-
GERN
Geron Corporation - $5.14
- +2.80%
- $5.12
Yes, I know... this is highly spec and I don't hold a huge block of it, but it could go through the roof if ANY of its several phaseII products turns out to be as good as the developers think they will. This is stem-cell research and development, hamstrung for the last few years by the funding battles in D.C.
