STP is a chinese solar company. As of 1/28/08 forward PE is about 24 which is reasonable considering the growth potential. PEG =1.1 They are starting construction of a thin film silicon solar cell R&D and manufacturing plant. This will give them dual coverage of the solar cell market with both standard silicon cells and the new thin film ones. "Suntech's thin film module production will be based on technology that deposits amorphous and micro-crystalline silicon thin film on glass substrate. The product will use less than 2% of the silicon required to manufacture equivalent crystalline silicon PV products. Suntech currently projects that the thin film modules will have a solar conversion efficiency of 6% to 9% and an initial production cost of approximately $1.20 per watt (based on 6% solar conversion efficiency), which is forecasted to continue to decline as both production scale and conversion efficiencies increase. The thin film modules will be nearly 6 square meters in size, which would make the balance of system installation costs of Suntech's thin film solution significantly lower than other PV solutions." from their press release

ENER
Energy Conversion - $10.57
- +0.38%
- $10.49
Invented the nickle hydride battery, also makes lithium ion batteries. Solar cells and panels including manufacturing equipment. Fuel cell and hydrogen storage system (amorphous metal technology stores hydrogen in non pressurized system). Invented phase change technology for CD and DVD which may be adopted by the industry. Their battery joint venture with Texaco has agreements to supply batteries for most of the proposed hybrid cars by major auto manufacturers. The solar division is profitable already. It may take awhile, but eventually I think ENER will pay off big.

WFR
Memc Electronic M - $12.08

- $12.25
Makes silicon wafers for both computer chips and solar cells. Solar is putting a big demand on supplies of silicon dioxide wafers. Recent drop to $57+ a buying oppurtunity.

GVAX This stock with a mere $150M market cap has third and 2nd Phase trials ongoing of their GVAX cancer immunotherapies for several types of cancer. Prostrate cancer trials are the most advanced. Also more drugs in pipeline. Wholly owned subsidiary Ceragene is gene therapy company with drugs in pipeline. This is the company that spun off Abgenix, the monoclonal antibody company which was bought out last year by a major pharma co. I'm no expert but am more knowledgeable about biotech than most. To me, their drug for prostrate cancer sounds more promising than Dendreon's

Makes carbon fiber products. There should be big demand for such products from automobile mfg, wind turbine blades, boats, aircraft mfg. etc. More and more things are getting built of this strong material. Sales est. to grow 45% in 2008 after growing 63% this year. Forward PE 17 PEG .66

FCEL
Fuelcell Energy - $3.25
- -1.22%
- $3.30
Makes power plant scale fuel cells. They can run on methane, methanol, natural gas. Have 24 Mwatt contract with state of Connecticut. These fuel cells can be used to create power from landfills, water treatment plants, farm waste digesters etc. Not profitable yet, but I believe they will continue to get contracts. They can use the same natural gas already piped to power plants, but much cleaner and cheaper. Harness heat from fuel cells to generate more electricity.

correction: I bought DNDN at $4.50 NOT $3.50

A few notes about the portfolio.
I deleted DNDN after I sold for a successful trade after holding two months or so. Had bought at
$3.50 and sold at $18.20. At that point it seemed that the FDA would probably ask for more clinical data on Provenge, which is what transpired this week.
MDTL is one I was going to delete from the portfolio because it's a little iffy. They do have an interesting product that may payoff.
TSL is another good solar co that has had a good run recently but is still relatively cheaply valued going foreward as compared with most of it's peers
They make both solar cells and the silicon wafers from which they are manufactured.
MBLX isn't alone in the emerging bio plastics field. But they are apparently leading the pack and have ADM for a partner. Someone suggested a smaller player that is actually selling product now to companies that make plastic dinner ware and packaging. It's a 48 cent bulletin board stock CERP Cereplast. I intent to keep my eye on it.
