Nancy Prial is the manager of the Managers AMG Essex Small/Micro Cap Growth Fund (MBRSX), which garners five stars from Morningstar and has annualized returns exceeding 16 percent. Though admittedly “battered and bruised” by today’s market climate, Prial continues to find emerging growth companies whose businesses are still improving.

Prial looks for companies at an inflection point where a company’s revenue and earnings growth are not yet fully reflected in its share price. Right now, she’s focused on the biotech tool sector, including companies such as Illumina, whose pharmaceutical customers are investing heavily in new drug development. She also favors equipment suppliers to the alternative energy sector such as ball-bearing manufacturer Kaydon, whose products keep industrial wind turbines spinning.

“We are still finding a lot of companies whose businesses are improving. The growth is less thematic than in past bull markets, but there are still companies that are improving returns to shareholders through innovative technologies, process improvements or market share gains,” says Prial.
