More than stocks, bonds or commodities, the biggest bull market right now is in deals, with a historic flurry of M&A and going-private transactions the likes of which developed capital markets have never seen.

Of course, actually participating in the private equity gold rush has been largely made off limits for folks of modest means due to regulatory constraints.

As a result of those regulatory hurdles, the easiest avenue by which to participate in private equity and private-equity-like investments is by putting money in a business development company, or BDC, a small but expanding corner of the capital markets whose growth is mirroring that of deal making and private equity in general.
