Merrill’s Losses Were Bad; They Could Have Been Worse	Merrill Lynch’s losses were ugly — but they could have been worse. The brokerage, set to be acquired by Bank of America Inc., would have lost more than $5.2 billion if it had not gotten a net benefit of $2.8 billion due to the declining prices of its own obligations.
