Media Merger Candidates

Description:

May 15, 2007 - Thomson (TOC) has agreed to buy Reuters (RTRSY) for $17.2 billion (£8.7 billion) to create the world's biggest financial news and data firm, the companies said on Tuesday.

The takeover has the support of the Reuters Founders Share Company, which has the power to block a change of ownership, but the deal still needs regulatory clearance and shareholder approval, the companies said in a joint statement.

Good time to buy Thomson? Reuters? How does this affect the Dow Jones/Newscorp talks? Are there other possible merger candidates?

What other players might be actively doing deals? Viacom's a possibility. With the large Hispanic demographic, there's a possibility for media consolidation. This trend started in 2001 when NBC, now owned by GE, bought Telemundo. How about Viacom (VIAB), owner of CBS or Disney (DIS) owner of ABC.
