Hello PickerCommunity.
I'm looking to add a utility company to my ROTH. Looking for some gains and of
course dividends.
Ones I've thought of so far are DUK, PGN or ED.
Leaning more toward DUK or PGN over ED.
Any +/- comments on those or an alternative suggestion appreciated.
Thank you,
Jon -

A: Correct corporations become MLP's because of the attractive tax structure that taxes
oweners of partnership only once. These pipelines and utilities are slow growing but
produce steady cash flow of assets which they turn into nice dividends for us. Because
cash distributions usually exceed partnership income the difference is counted as a return
of capital and taxed as ordinary income. Unit holders will then pay a tax of 10% or less
down to 0%.
However limited partners might owe taxes on partnership income even if the units are held
in a tax-free account, like an IRA.
Also To get around this restriction, two companies, Enbridge
ENB) and Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (KMP, have set up separate share classes that pay
dividends in the form of partnership units rather than cash, allowing institutions to
participate. Shares of Enbridge Energy Management (EEQ and Kinder Morgan Management
(KMR) also hold allure for individual investors--because they are organized as
corporations, investors don’t have to deal with the tax-filing headaches of a
traditional MLP. Mutual funds are now allowed to buy MLP units, but to date, funds have
expressed relatively little interest. more - Post your own answer

I agree with your comments tonight regarding Dell's purchase and how it's
basically copying "HP's model" but why not give credit where it's due. If Dell
copied HP then it's only fair to recognize that HP copied IBM. And it can be
argued that IBM is still doing a better job then HP.
I've yet to read confession; is there perhaps something in there that might shed
some light on your less then favorable feelings toward IBM ?
P.S. I'll keep on watching and learning.

A: Thank you Nymph, Drew and π
You can search via name at sec.com, however, I wasn't able to find who I was looking for.
I couldn't find myself either so perhaps the person has to own a minimum percentage to
show up via the search.
Thank you. more - Post your own answer

Jim,
I'm so glad to see you come around fully to IBM. You've gone from putting Sam on
the wall to recommending IBM both technically (from Dan) and fundamentally to a
buy buy. I've chastised you in the past for being negative on IBM so now it's
time for me to take that back since you've come to see the light that's been
reflected in IBM's results.
Thank you,

Freddie any Fanny..
First, just to clear my memory, didn't Jim call for this ?
Second what is the expected near and longer term affects on housing and houses ?
The only thought that comes to my mind is that I've heard it should lower rates
which itself should spur demand/prices for existing houses as well as slow down
the number of foreclosures.

I'd specifically like an answer to this from Jim Cramer. Others can certainly
chime in but this is directed to Jim Cramer.
Why do you hate IBM ???
Four large caps announce earnings after hours today and they're bad except for
IBM. Matter of fact IBM had a 13% increase in revenues, earnings beat estimates
by about 8.8% and they raised 2008 guidance by about 3%. How many companies the
size of IBM can boast that in this market especially a non gadget tech company ?
You do seem to favor MSFT and how was their earnings announcement tonight ?
Seems like I heard complaints about the weather or some such thing from MSFT.
And even though IBM beat and raised you said in MM tonight, was it, unimpressive
you said ?? Why ?? What am I missing to think IBM's earning is anything but
impressive while you say unimpressive ??
