- Q:
I've owned EMC for years at a cost basis of $16.71, and recently took a large
position in RIMM at $64. and HPQ at $44. Since tech seems confined to it's
largest price gains in the 4th quarter, should I sell into strength now, for a
minor gain, or continue to white knuckle the market for a few more months,
sitting out the overbought/oversold roller coaster rides
confident my patience will be rewarded in the second half of this year? I am
currently only 5% in cash. Thank you for considering my question. -

A: In response to "fine tune your discipline",
I would consider that approach on a more high beta stock like VMW, but EMC? I really
thought my perserverance in holding it so long would reward me with a nice long term
capital gain. Over the last ten years of investing, I have created a pattern, perhaps
being spoiled, with consistent long term capital gains. Last year, my trades looked like
I was day trading. In the high anxiety of 2009, I took profits so frequently, my tax
return may look like a big red flag due to the obvious change in trading pattern. Because
I so closely follow Jim Cramer's lead, I feel confident that I'm in quality stocks. But
after watching hedge funds damage quality names last year, I was really fishing for more
reinforcement that said "Yes, you're in solid growth and value stocks that will perform
well for you and not to worry about market volatility, because your stocks are better than
99% of the stocks out there!" Or, do you just ever advise people to not watch CNBC during
the day and your anxiety will go away? Or, don't look at your portfolio every day? more - Post your own answer
- Q:
Could I please have your opinion on the direction of FCX? Is it totally tied to
the price of oil, gold, and growth in China? I could currently sell it for a
small profit. Do you see it morphing higher in the next twelve months? -

A: They report next week and we should get a good idea then. Lower energy prices and higher
gold prices should have made this a good quarter for them. Estimates are $1.35 EPS on
$4.18 billion in revenues, and estimates for the current quarter are only $1.08 EPS on
$3.63 billion in revenues. I think they will disappoint if they do not at least meet the
estimates and raise for the current quarter. FCX is up over 130 percent from their March
9 low, and it may be unreasonable to expect them to continue at that pace. more - Post your own answer
- Q:
I just sold half my position in SLT for a profit, because they just announced an
offering that would dilute their shares.
Should I sell the other half, too?
I will appreciate your thoughtful response. -

New Question: What's your opinion on the upcoming TWX split? I've held it since
the last crash in '01. I've read the split is supposed to unlock a lot of value
for shareholders. What do you think? -

- Q:
Did the G-7 really come up with an answer today that will keep the market from
drastically falling tomorrow and Tuesday? Or, was it just a European solution
for European
Banks only?
Thanks for your thoughtful response. -

A: EU and UK banks/financial institutions only. We came up with concepts, but that is about
it.
Early last week Bush stated something would be in place by the end of October. Then on
Friday he stated by the end of the coming week.
If this is correct, we will have a disastrous week. more - Post your own answer

New Question: What do the G.S. and Morgan news mean to me?
I own both. Are they both becoming banks, too?
Are they merging into one big bank? Under more regulations, will their
potential stock be valued less than they would if they had remained investment
banks? -

- Q:
I sold my COP yesterday while I could still
take a profit. Was I stupid? Should I have
asked your opinion before I sold? I owned it
at $68.50. Will the spiral down in energy
give me the opportunity to buy it back cheaper? -
