- Q:
So I was watching Maria Bartiromo's Google show last night (which wasnt good but
thats for another post)
I started thinking why is Californias economy so screwed up? That state has
Google, Cisco, Ebay, etc. Silicon Valley with all the world leading tech
companies bring in revenue for the state and they have so many issues? Whats
going on in that state? Why are they so messed up when it comes to the balance
sheet? -

A: I worked in high tech in CA for 16 years. One industry cannot carry an entire state just
like one industry cannot carry the entire country. The salaries are high in tech to combat
the outrageous home prices and real estate taxes. Other industries pay decent but not
nearly as well. Income taxes are nearly equivalent to federal taxes. Many deductions are
not allowed. However, the state has so many entitlement programs that apply to all comers,
regardless of citizenship. Gangs are a huge problem and the cost of combating gangs,
drugs, and paying out to illegal workers and educating (which amounts to mostly trying to
keep order in the classroom with bilingual children who cannot understand the English
courses). The state spends so much on border patrol rather than green cards, and the
number of illegals that drain the system without paying taxes and sending the US dollar
back to their countries is a huge dent in the state budget. Policing areas and fighting
drugs is an ongoing battle that takes time and $$ manpower. Last stat I heard was 800
separate id'd gangs in LA area alone. Over 300 in Monterey Peninsula. Some high salaries
that are highly taxed seems to put money into state coffers. Entitlement programs and
constant need to put up infrastructure to support the wave of people who come into the
state continually, along with the expenses to protect the population and pay for the
highly populated prison system drain hits the coffers. Like many states, there are insane
pork barrel programs to repay political debts. It is a beautiful state and lovely to live
in, but how many times have you watched fires roaring North of LA or heard of seismic
activity losing homes, highways, lives? It takes $$$ to pay employees to clean up. DMV is
overwhelmed, without an appointment it takes hours to get a human. There are too many
people not paying into a system that provides costly benefits. There are a high number of
natural disasters. Like all onions, this has many layers. I am not unopposed to
immigration, should it sound that way. I am opposed to the way it is managed and the
impact it creates. I am opposed to building on the San Andreas fault. Tax dollars are
often earmarked but then put into a General Fund, draining the areas where they are
needed, like schools. There are many common sense ideas but few with the political stomach
to propose or embrace them. more - Post your own answer

so lets say I own the stock STAR. I want some protection in the form of puts.
How do I do it? I have lvl 1 options. I bought it STAR @ 24.70, 84 shares.
=2000$
So how many puts would I need to protect myself. Is it worth protection with
this amount in? -

A: You could buy one 25 strike put. However, that could be too pricey. For 84 shares of a
stock, using a stop order is better than playing options. more - Post your own answer

A: I wouldn't look just at the broad market if we are getting a correction now it will not be
a bad one. That is your time to be buying it is like shopping you buy companies a
discount! more - Post your own answer
