Top ten reasons why it’s a gamble to invest in refiners (not in any particular
order).
1. their raw material is an expensive commodity ( the guys who get the stuff out
of the ground are the real winners)
2. their products (gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, etc.) are expensive commodities
(demand is slowing)
3. it’s an energy intensive business and energy is expensive (they boil oil to
make products)
4. their biggest product (gasoline) is sold by retailers who display the price
up on big, visible signs on the street (is there any other commodity with such
visible pricing?).
5. to make money they have to be efficient, safe and reliable, which is not
cheap
6. scale is important, got to be big
7. compliance with environmental regs is costly (EPA, air pollution, gasoline
specs, etc)
8. with the dems are taking over, #7 and general business environment will only
get tougher
9. economic growth drives sales of your products: the country is in or near a
recession
10. maintenance, catalysts, people and chemicals are big cost drivers, and
aren’t getting any cheaper -

Strike at Scotland's only oil refinery shuts down major BP North Sea oil
pipeline system
EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) -- Hundreds of workers at Scotland's only oil refinery
on Sunday began a 48-hour strike that has forced BP PLC to shut a pipeline
system that delivers almost a third of Britain's North Sea oil.
BP said it had completed the closure of the Forties Pipeline System by 6 a.m.,
when 1,200 workers at the Grangemouth refinery in central Scotland walked off
the job. The pipeline brings in 700,000 barrels of oil a day from the North Sea
to BP's Kinneil plant, which is powered from the Grangemouth site. -

A: At present, just holding several jumbo CD's and in Vanguards Prime $ mkt. Getting killed
on return. Just as soon see interest rates @ 6% as I carry no debt and no mortgage.
Involved in real estate and shying away from Reits as commercial is beginning to be
affected by the subprime. Until '06 kept much of my funds in various Vanguards mutual
funds. Feeling I could do better managing my own portfolio, cashed out and began trading
most of the time since real estate is so slow. I only have $200K in equities @ any one
time to minimize my risk. So far so good. more - Post your own answer

Vanguard Market Neutral Fund Investor Shares (VMNFX)
The fund seeks to meet its investment objective by purchasing shares of stocks
that its advisors consider undervalued and selling short an approximately equal
dollar amount of stocks considered overvalued.
Sounds interesting. One little catch - you need $250,000 to open an account.
Q. how hard for an individual Pickr to pull this off strategy? How many stocks
do you need?
thanks, FF -

A: Most if not all market neutral funds do not have a very good track record. If the pros
have a hard time pulling it off, why even attempt it as a homegamer?? If you want to
attempt it, do so through options, buying calls and puts. Would take a lot more homework
and I wouldn't commit a lot of capital to it unless you became wildly successful at it. more - Post your own answer

A: With the exception of Friday's big move, GE usually moves at a snail's pace. So, there's
plenty of time to get in on a good entry point. As far as i'm concerned, GE is on
probation unless or until it redeems itself with a good quarterly earnings report. more - Post your own answer
