- Q:
Nordstrom (JWN) just raised its dividend from $0.16 to $0.20. Q1 earnings were
up 67% from a year earlier. The stock has pulled back about 18% from it's recent
high. I think that it's starting to look attractive here.

A: there is a difference in the way ETNs are taxed vs ETFs (because of they difference in the
way they are structured). Generally the tax treatment of ETNs are more favorable. There is
also no tracking error with an ETN (though there is credit risk). more - Post your own answer

When I saw this headline, I finally realized the extent of the Chinese threat
and why we need to do something about it:
"China blocks Bob Dylan Gigs; Bob Dylan's planned tour of east Asia called off
after Chinese officials refuse him permission to play in Beijing and Shanghai."

illusions that can manipulate you into thinking theres some kind of change.

A: Steve - you are right that CVI is in a better position (because it is diversificated with
fertilizers) compared to a pure refiner like VLO which is taking a real beatin. VLO has
ethanol plants but that's a gasoline substitute so really is just a form of refining IMHO.
Too bad CVI is so small. You really need scale (size and capital) in this biz. more - Post your own answer

Has anybody noticed the sudden increase in vehicle recall announcements lately?
I’m not just talking about Toyota, but also the Ford announcement that they
were offering a braking software change for their hybrid models followed by
Honda recalling several models for airbag problems.
It seems to me that some of these automakers are using the Toyota brouhaha as
“cover” for their own recalls. I suppose the other automakers figure that
the media will be busy reporting on the Toyota situation and thus won’t give
them as much attention. I can see the logic of this and how it might be a good
time for them to slip in a recall or two.
As a result, I fully expect there to be more recalls and announcements in the
near future. I don’t think Toyota’s competitors want to waste a good
opportunity to use this media storm to camouflage some of their own problems. -

A: yeah...my subaru had a recall on a small part...think i got the notice back in oct or
something like that. (had to do with potential fuel pumps leaking) mine didn't have any
oders...it's under the passenger seat, think i would of noticed if i did have a leak)well
i didn't bother to get it fixed until i was due for an oil change. killed 2 birds with one
stone. but since my car was only made for 2 yrs...i guess it was small potatoes compared
to these massive numbers by toyota. more - Post your own answer

When I saw that the spx was down over 3% today, I wondered how long it had been
since we had a 3% day, either up or down.
How long has it been since we've had such a big move? -

I've been looking to buy Diamond Offshore (DO) at a cheaper price and it's
getting closer. But today things are more complicated because DO reported
lower-than-expected earnings for Q4.
Should I still buy DO and at what price now?
It's still paying a good dividend and rebound at some point, but I don't want to
pay too much.
