Got ideas for Mexico?
Source Bedlam Asset Management and KSU
Shipping cost advantage to Chicago
Route
Cost per cubic foot ($)Transit time (days) Shanghai to Chicago 2.92 25
Monterrey, Mexico to Chicago 0.40 6-7
Source: Kansas City Southern
China's loss of competitiveness is evident when compared to countries such as
Mexico. There labor was relatively expensive. Over the last two years China's
average minimum wage rose 28% (top 30 cities). Since 2003 Chinese wages are up
218%; over the same period Mexico's are only up by 25%, thus China is quickly
converging and now only 15% behind. Add higher transportation costs and transit
times, then the logic of locating production to Mexico for goods destined for
the North American market becomes overwhelming. As shown above, the cost of
transporting goods by rail from Monterrey (Mexico) to Chicago is less than
one-seventh the cost from Shanghai ($2.91/cubic foot), and a quarter of the
shipping time (25 days). Hence the US/Mexican rail company Kansas City Southern
(KCS) is experiencing rapid growth as manufacturing companies relocate to
Mexico. The Mexican government expects foreign direct investment of $22bn in
2011, versus $10bn in 2010. Of the seventy major new manufacturing facilities
built, 80% were on KCS 5 of 9 network - not just American, bunetwork - not just
American, but global companies such Samsung, Intel, General Motors, Volkswagen
and Toyota."

A: intersting brian. think i called you s larson on another post - my apologies. first blush
would note the Union Pacific runs thru Mexico too. Not sure if you researched what the
numbers are but I assume KSU is deeper in it overall. Grupo Carso in Mexico is the main
railroad co and competitor of KSU but i think they only trade over the counter in the US -
no ADRs as far as I know. SIM (steel play) and TMM (water trans play) may be tickers you
would be interested in but they are more like spec plays (esp TMM no volume) and you would
probably want to buy only on serious macro dips as opposed to jumping in. like the idea
though - hope the discussion continues. noticed a ton of lumber passes thru the
mexican/us border - any way to play that other than the railroads? wonder if the cartels
use the KSU. :-0 more - Post your own answer

CVR Energy Inc. (CVI)
CVR Energy board approves dividend plan
Houston Business Journal

s-dividend-plan.html?ana=yfcpc
CVR Energy Inc. (NYSE: CVI) said Monday that its board of directors has
approved its first regular quarterly dividend of 8 cents per common share.
Sugar Land-based CVR Energy, majority owner of CVR Partners LP (NYSE: UAN), said
the initial dividend payment would be made after the end of the first quarter.
CVR Energy, a refiner and marketer of petroleum fuels, said in a statement that
it decided to initiate the dividend payment because of its confidence in its
future prospects and commitment to deliver long-term value for shareholders.
The board also said it would sell a portion of the company's investment in CVR
Partners to pay for a special dividend to shareholders and in order to
strengthen the company's balance sheet. -

A: When a stock pays a div....the balance sheet and the next few reporting Q's usually take a
hit. It is no longer cash retained.
The same reason when a company cuts it's div....the stock usually rallies off that....why?
> CASH retained > hence bolstering it's overall valuation.

"BP plc (BP) British Petroleum @ $29.00 per share is looking tempting
here.....When you hear people say "they're going to go broke after clean up cost"...step
in and buy a few shares around here. It's called "buying when blood is in the streets"
It's already shed over 50% of it's market cap since spill. And believe it or not...if they
cut the dividend that is good for share price. This is a trade at $29
Sometimes ya just have to take a shot!
Statistical factoid : You miss a 100% of the shots ya never take!
When they cut the div here...it will rally
