With that in mind, let's take a closer look at a several stocks under $10 that are making large moves to the upside today.

Five Star Quality

Five Star Quality (FVE) operates senior living communities, including independent living or congregate care communities, assisted living communities and skilled nursing facilities. This stock closed up 4.4% to $6.34 on Thursday.

Thursday's Range: $6.08-$6.40

52-Week Range: $2.98-$6.49

Volume: 412,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 343,548

From a technical perspective, FVE trended higher here right above some near-term support at $6 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last three months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $4.45 to its recent high of $6.49. During that move, shares of FVE have been mostly making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of FVE within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if FVE manages to take out its 52-week high of $6.49 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in FVE as long as it’s trending above some near-term support levels $6 to $5.91 or its 50-day at $5.62, and then once it sustains a move or close above its 52-week high of $6.49 with volume that hits near or above 343,548 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then FVE will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $7.50 to $8. Any high-volume move above $8 will then put $8.50 to $8.95 into range for shares of FVE.

Smart Technologies

Smart Technologies (SMT) designs, develops and sells interactive technology products. This stock closed up 7.1% to $1.50 in recent trading.

Thursday's Range: $1.44-$1.60

52-Week Range: $1.10-$3.43

Volume: 138,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 143,500

From a technical perspective, SMT spiked higher here right above some near-term support at $1.35 with slightly lighter-than-average volume. This move briefly pushed shares of SMT back above its 200-day moving average of $1.55 and right below its 50-day moving average of $1.61. Shares of SMT closed off its intraday high of $1.60 with volume that was just a tad bit below its three-month average action of 143,500 shares.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SMT as long as it’s trending above $1.35, and then once it sustains a move or close above its 200-day at $1.55 and its 50-day at $1.61 with volume that hits near or above 143,500 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SMT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.85 to $2.08. Any high-volume move above $2.08 will then put $2.20 to $2.50 into focus for shares of SMT.

American Apparel

American Apparel (APP) designs, manufactures and sells for women, men, children and pets through retail, wholesale and online distribution channels. This stock closed up 3.1% to $1.33 on Thursday.

Thursday's Range: $1.27-$1.35

52-Week Range: $0.72-$1.70

Volume: 396,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 359,719

From a technical perspective, APP bounced higher here right above some near-term support at $1.25 and its 50-day moving average of $1.23 with above-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of APP within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if APP manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.38 to $1.45 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in APP as long as it’s trending above its 50-day at $1.23, and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 359,719 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then APP will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.58 to $1.70. Any high-volume move above $1.70 will then push shares of APP into new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. The next major resistance levels after $1.70 sit at $1.90 to $2.20.

CytRx

CytRx (CYTR) is a biopharmaceutical research and development company specializing in oncology. This stock closed up 9.9% to $2.10 on Thursday.

Thursday's Range: $1.94-$2.14

52-Week Range: $1.59-$5.50

Volume: 251,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 171,579

Shares of CYTR blasted higher on Thursday after the company said its enrollment of 140 evaluable patients has been completed in its global phase 2b clinical trial with its oral retinoid compound tamibarotene in combination with chemotherapeutic agents as a first-line treatment for patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer.

From a technical perspective, CYTR surged higher back above its 50-day moving average of $2.07 with above-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of CYTR within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if CYTR manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.20 to $2.30 and then once it clears more resistance at $2.42 to $2.60 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CYTR as long as it’s trending above its 50-day at $2.07 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 171,579 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then CYTR will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from last October that started at $3.60.
